There are many different types of Psychotherapy, the word psychotherapy is derived from the Ancient Greek words for psyche, literally translated as breath, spirit, or soul and therapeia or therapeuein, literally translated as to nurse or to cure. Since then it has been popularly defined as an approach based relief of distress or disability in a one person by another, psychotherapy is an activity undertaken by highly trained and qualified professionals called psychotherapists, psychotherapists help individuals to cope with the stress associated with everyday life and general everyday stressful situations, by creating a sense of well being. This can be used to deal with stress, relationship problems such as marriage/family therapy and overcome troublesome habits, there are different types of treatments some of the most common practised ones being: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Behavioural Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family and Marital Therapy.
The therapy can be performed by different professionals with various types of qualifications such as counsellors, social workers and marriage and family therapists. Each psychotherapist can use a variety of different methods to build a relationship with the client. Psychotherapists can employ a range of relationship building techniques to open up a dialogue and communication between the two parties, with an aim to modify individual thinking patterns and to create a behavioural change that can improve the mental health of a patient, all treatment methods used nearly always have one thing in common ‘Talking’.
