Scientist at Kings College London found that women with high levels of vitamin D have longer telomeres (part of our DNA that protects chromosomes from destruction) a sign of being biologically younger and healthier. This also suggests that vitamin D can help slow down DNA ageing and is essential to a healthy body by supporting bone health and other functions. Most of our vitamin D is from sunlight but this can be hard in winter when the weather is bad. The recommended daily amount set to prevent deficiency is set at 5 micrograms. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or get less than 10 minutes exposure to sunlight then the RDA is 10mircorgrams.
