Allergies - caused by eating particular foods

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

Sometimes we experience unpleasant reactions after eating particular foods. These can have serious consequences and in some cases if not treated on time lead to death. Other effects can be coughing, wheezing, itchy rash, eczema or tingling of the most or throat. Some of the most common allergies include peanut allergies, wheat, gluten and diary. Some children can out grown some of the allergies whilst with others they stay for life and vary in severity.
Serious allergies to nuts affect nearly 2% of the population and those most at risk are those who suffer hay fever, asthma and eczema. For this reason food labels must be read carefully.

Meningitis and Septicaemia

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

Meningitis is an inflammation of the brain lining. It is a very serious illness and if it’s picked up and treated early it can lead to full recovery. Septicaemia is blood poising which is caused by the same germs that cause meningitis and is also a very serious illness which needs to be treated early as possible.
There are lots of different types of these illnesses and some can be prevented by immunisation. Early symptoms of the illness can be that similar to a cold or flu – fever, vomiting, irritability and restlessness. If children have these illnesses then they become very ill within a couple of hours.

Immunisation and protecting against serious diseases

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

Immunisation is a way of protecting against serious diseases. Once we have been immunised then out bodies are able to fight those diseases if we ever come in contact with them. Children have there first jab when they are 2 months old followed by further does of the immunisations when they are 3 months old and 4 months old. After this it’s normally when they are 13 months and before children start school. In children when having the injections they can feel ill for a few days after. Symptoms include fever, heavy hand/leg and general unwellness. Doctors and nurses normally advise to give parecetomal if any of the symptoms exist after a injection.

Young children and food poisoning

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

Young children are vulnerable to bacteria that can cause food poisoning. For this reason it’s important to store, prepare and cook food safely not just for children but for the whole family. Kitchen cleanliness is essential so keeping chopping boards, utensils clean and washing hands before preparing foods is key. To be safe it’s advised to wash all fruit and vegetables before eating, avoid raw eggs as they sometimes contain Salmonella bacteria that gives food poisoning and when re-heating food you need to check that it’s piping hot all the way through and then cool before giving to children. If you use microwaves then heating normally causes heat spots so stirring is essential.

Cosmetic vs. essential laser treatments

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

We all suffer from our vanities, which is why cosmetic surgery and treatment is so popular these days. However, there are some occasions when these kinds of treatments can make a huge difference not just to a person’s physical appearance, but their health, well-being and sense of self-confidence too.

Laser treatment is the perfect example of this. Some people use cosmetic laser treatments to improve their self-esteem, through the removal of unwanted body hair, scars, cellulite and acne. These treatments are a one-time way for people to permanently get rid of aspects of their physical appearance that they are self-conscious about, although it is an expensive way to do so.

Necessary treatments for health reasons

Rather than for purely cosmetic reasons, other people may need to undergo laser treatment or surgery in order to improve their health or quality of life. A prime example of this, and one of the most popular options these days, is laser eye treatment. These procedures can be used to permanently correct vision, so that there is no need to worry about wearing glasses or contact lenses.

There is a cosmetic reason why people undergo this treatment, but in general it makes life easier for people with vision problems.

The Benefits of Sunshine

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

Well summer is now officially over – although I’m not entirely sure when it actually started, as we have had the wettest July and August – it is quickly approaching the time of year when the clocks will go back and our hours of sunshine will quickly decrease. This year the clocks will go back on Sunday 31st October so it is vital that people get as much of the sunshine as they can during the day as sunshine releases Vitamin D. My advice is to ensure that you go for a walk over lunch time as opposed to going to a gym indoors. If this is not possible then ensure that you make the most of the outdoors over the weekend by going for walks or runs outside in the fresh air.

The Recommended Water Allowance

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

As I have recently decided that I needed to drink more water, I was intrigued to find out how much we are supposed to drink and how much is too much. I know that we need to keep well hydrated and that drinking plenty of water is good for us but my concern is how much is necessary and is it possible to drink too much? Most credible studies agree that we need approximately 8 glasses of water a day. Another survey suggested that we need 2.5 litres of water a day, this is slightly easier to measure as it is difficult to define ‘a glass’, so sticking to the recommended 2.5 litres should mean that you avoid drinking too much or too little.
