Drinking Alcohol on an Empty Stomach

By: Vipul / Category: Health FAQs

The effect of this is Heartburn and Nausea. As alcohol is a digestive stimulant it needs food as it gets your digestive juices working - if it doesn’t get this then you’ll end up with a stomach full of acid causing heartburn. Eventually this can even lead to peptic ulcers.

If you are going out from work then it’s worth taking a snack to eat just before you leave to go out. This will slow down the alcohol absorption and at the same time protect the stomach lining. For the nauseous feeling the next day, an antacid or ginger tea can help.

This is great advice. A friend of mine got very heavily drunk on the weekend after managing to successfully duck every effort to get her to eat… surprise, surprise she was comatose very early on and looked like a George A Romero cast member the next morning.

Eat before drinking, it doesn’t just improve your health it improves your quality of day too!
