Head lice are small insects with six legs and are often said to be as large as a match stick head but in fact are no bigger than a pin head. They live on or very close to the scalp and don’t wander far down the hair shafts for long. They also only live on human beings and cannot be caught from animals. Nits are egg cases laid b lice and stick to the hair. Anybody can get lice but they are much rare in adults and are a problem that affects the whole community not just the schools. You are very unlikely to pick up head lice from brief contact with other people generally its head to head contact with someone who has lice. The best way to prevent this is by checking your head to find lice before they can start breeding. If you find you do have lice then the best treatment is to use lotion from the chemist or doctors surgery.
