Immunisation

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

At around 13 months, children are offered the MMR immunisation that protects against measles, mumps and rubella. They are also offered the PCV which protest against pneumococcal infection.  This is a very dangerous illness causing blood poisoning meningitis and pneumonias.

Later, booster doses of other immunisation will help to make sure they have the best protection against some serious diseases before starting school.  DTaP/IPV is an injection to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, a cellular pertussis (whooping cough) and polio.

MMR is to protect against measles, mumps and rubella is given with the booster does three months later.  Eggs are used to prepare the MMR vaccine and your doctor should be told if your child has a severe allergy to them.  Although parents worry the risk of complications from the MMR vaccine is tiny but the risks from the diseases themselves are life threatening for a child who has not been immunised.
