GDA Labelling on Food Packaging

By: Vipul / Category: Miscellaneous

GDA stand for Guideline Daily Amount. When looking at label’s at a glance GDA’s should provide the following information.

  • Number of Calories
  • Amount of Sugar
  • Amount of Fat
  • Amount of Saturated fat
  • Salt per portion

GDS’s are not just for people who are on a slimming or special diet. They are designed to help everyone become aware of exactly what and how much they are consuming.

If you are keeping an eye on your calorie intake, how much fat, sugar etc you are eating it helps ensure your family is getting the right balance of nutrients.

Each label has two figures in each category. The top row show’s quantity i.e. how many calories and how much fat, sugar, salt the food item has. In the second row this show’s the same figures as a percentage of GDA’s. E.G. a pudding portion has 242 calories. This is 12% of your GDA.

The great thing about GDA’s is that you don’t have to stop eating your favourite foods – just adjust the amounts you eat to fit into your GDA.
